2013 Jacko's Shiraz

“Michael “Jacko” James worked in our cellars until he succumbed to a long battle with leukemia at the age of 26. His legendary character and courage left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Our tribute to him is this full bodied Shiraz which displays rich peppery fruit over a firm underlying structure with great length.” – Geoff Merrill

Group 4

A wonderful array of dried herbs initially characterises the aroma. Oregano, dill and thyme come forward, then make way for black pepper, olive and black cherry.

Shape 4

Savoury and earthy tones also make their way from the aroma onto the full, fleshy palate. Fine ripe tannin, tight acidity and meaty flavours combine into an umami delight, with ripe red fruits adding colour and brightness to the palate.

Food Pairing

Drink now to 2028 with dry aged steak, steak tartare, pasta with shaved truffle and finished with Blue Castello.

VINTAGE INFORMATION: The 2013 vintage was a welcome return to a fairly ‘normal’ vintage. We had good winter and spring rains and only a small reduction in yield across a few varieties. The ripening period had a small heat ‘hiccup’ but the vines made it through unscathed and ripening continued extremely well enabling us to pick at full flavour ripeness.

“Deep red colour with a strong purple tint. The bouquet is rich and ripe and shows attractive mellow, mature fruit character. The wine is deliciously sweet-fruited on the palate, lush and slurpable, with abundant soft, fine tannins and lovely texture. It’s very charming and inviting. At six years, it’s in a great place – it’s a delicious drink right now. 5 stars

Huon Hooke (The Real Review) “Ranked #1 of 110 Shiraz from McLaren Vale in 2013”

“Reductive handling has worked well for this wine, which, despite 27 months in oak, maintains its freshness. Boysenberry, violet, star anise and a whiff of iodine bounce across the long finish line, with some vanilla tones a mere echo.”

Ned Goodwin (Halliday Wine Companion)

“Powerfully graceful, this is a magnificent shiraz filled with dark fruit richness, wonderfully supported by notes of game, cake spice, cedar and cocoa. It is mouth filling and delicious on the palate, offering fabulous fruit purity as well as seductive savoury nuances, superbly framed by silky tannins. Expansive, persistent and hugely appealing. 5 stars.”
