2006 Henley Shiraz

“Henley is named in honour of my Grandfather, who passed away at the ripe old age of 102. This wine is the best of the best of our McLaren Vale Shiraz and only a maximum of 10 barrels each vintage are set aside for Henley.” – Geoff Merrill

“A magnificent offering; the immensely complex bouquet shows blackberry, plum jam, cake spice, cocoa and cedar characters with a subtle lift of floral. The palate is superbly concentrated and sumptuous, exhibiting outstanding depth and power, brilliantly framed by velvety tannins. Seamless and impressively long on the finish.5 stars."

“You can easily drink this now but the rip of integrated tannin has it set for a long future. It's awash with complex spice and leather characters, yet forceful through the finish. Licorice, tobacco and dark chocolate notes continue the developed-but-youthful theme. Sweeter citrus candy flavours complete an exotic picture”.

“Tannin is the key. It’s hulking but well-integrated, firm and forceful without being over the top. It tastes quite leathery, quite developed, and yet there’s still plenty of fruit: liquorice, chocolate, tobacco, ground dry spice flavours chief among the components. Sweet, citrussy acidity sits high in the wine, and is the point either to be embraced or rejected, depending on your preference. The wine’s length and composure though, regardless of style, is ultra impressive.”
