2012 Reserve Shiraz

“Approx. 14 months after vintage, Geoff and Scott undergo a blind tasting to select the finest barrels from our McLaren Vale vineyards that make the grade for our Reserve Shiraz. These barrels are blended together in tank then returned to a variety of new and seasoned American and French oak hogsheads for additional maturation prior to bottling.”- Geoff Merrill

“This is gloriously opulent and magnificently developing; the instantly appealing bouquet shows dark fruit richness combined with seductive notes of cocoa, cake spice and cedar, leading to a concentrated palate that is plush and impressively weighted. It is powerful and intense, wonderfully enhanced by velvety mouthfeel and seamlessly integrated silky tannins. Multi-layered and totally delicious.5 stars.”

94 points – Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

“Deep red to brick-red colour, showing maturity, as is the bouquet which is toasty, smoky, earthy, walnutty and more about mellow-aged character than primary fruit, while the palate is full-bodied and plush, showing signs of generous oaking. Crisp acidity keeps the palate bright in spite of hefty body and a certain chewiness.”

“The reserve is a result of selecting the best barrels and then giving them another whack of oak. The rich succulence of McLaren Vale is evident, and the oak helps build structure and intensity on the palate. Will handle some cellaring.”

”A rich, avuncular wine that is comforting in its tenacious hold on the way things were and for many, comfortably remain. Bitter chocolate, malt, dried black fruit and hoisin sauce notes bulldoze their way across a palate layered with pliant grape tannins, plenty of vanilla pod oak and very perky acidity. Remarkably, there is nothing particularly heavy about it all.”
